My cultural timeline of the world continues:

1551 – 1600 AD 

1553 AD — The Portuguese settle Macau.

1554 AD — William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England.

1554 AD — St Basil’s Cathedral is built in Moscow.

1558 AD — Elizabeth Tudor becomes Queen Elizabeth I of England at age 25.

1562 AD — El Escorial* is erected in Spain, northwest of Madrid. It would become a royal residence, a final resting place for Spanish monarchs, a Roman Catholic church, a monastery, and a museum. *= UNESCO World Heritage Site

1564 AD — Galileo Galilei is born.

1565 AD — St Augustine begins its life as the oldest continuously occupied European colony in the United States.

1566 AD — Death of Suleiman the Magnificent.

1567 AD — Mary, Queen of Scots, is imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth I.

1569 AD — The city of Fatehpur Sikri* was founded by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It is famous today as one of the best examples of Mughal architecture in the world.  *= UNESCO World Heritage Site

1569 AD — Humayun’s Tomb* is built in Delhi, India. It is the first garden tomb erected in India.  *= UNESCO World Heritage Site

1571 AD — Crimean Tatars sack Moscow, burning all but the Kremlin.

1577 AD — Sir Francis Drake begins his circumnavigation of the world. His voyage is completed in 1580.

1580 AD — Spain unites with Portugal under Philip II.

1582 AD — Pope Gregory XIII issues the Gregorian Calendar.

1585 AD — The colony at Roanoke, Virginia is founded in North America. The first child of English descent was born in this colony in 1587. The settlement has come to be known as the Lost Colony since the colonists disappeared without a trace. Each summer, a play, called The Lost Colony,  is performed al fresco in a theater built expressly for this purpose.

1596 AD — Birth of Rene Descartes.

1600 AD — Piazza Navona is completed. This cherished oblong space was once a chariot-racing venue.
