Colorado is noted for its mountains. It straddles the Front Range of the Rockies and sports 20 peaks which rise more than 10,000 feet. It’s no surprise that Rocky Mountain National Park is located entirely within the state. Trail Ridge Road is one of its most beautiful highways.
Pike’s Peak, the inspiration for the song, “America the Beautiful,” is also found in the state.
At the base of the 14,110 foot mountain is one of America’s finest state parks, Garden of the Gods State Park, a kaleidoscope of unusual sandstone formations and a training ground for mountain-climbers from around the world.
Not far from Pike’s Peak is the United State Air Force Academy which features, on its campus, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous buildings, the Air Force Academy Chapel.
In the southwestern part of Colorado lie some of the most well-preserved Native American archaeological sites. Mesa Verde National Park contains a number of them.
