Best of Salzburg

The city of Salzburg, in the northwestern corner of Austria, has two (2) very famous claims to fame. It was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of history’s best composers of classical music, and it was the setting for one of the most beloved movies of all time, the “Sound of Music.”

It turns out that the city itself is lovely, lying along the Salzbach River, with an intriguing white castle overlooking the narrow, cobblestone streets. Be sure to include Salzburg in any exploration of Austria or southern Germany.

Mozart’s birthplace is prominently located in the Old Town.

Actually, all things Mozart are offered in town, from Mozart Balls, a chocolate candy, to a square in the composer’s name with tower bells that play, of course, Mozart.

Mirabell Gardens is one of the places which was used in the filming of Sound of Music.

Getriedegasse is the main shopping street in the city. It is pedestrian-only, narrow, and lined with interesting shops offering all types of merchandise.
