South Carolina is infamous because the Civil War began here, when confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter. It is also seen as a symbol of slavery in the South because of its many plantations. However, those days are gone. Now it is a desirable getaway for northerners, especially golfers, during the winter, and its long and attractive coastline has made the state an important family destination.
