As far as I am concerned, South Dakota begins and ends with the Black Hills. All of the major attractions are concentrated in this rather small region. We have been here once and are planning to return this summer, but at least I can initiate a “best of” sampling. We can add more later this year.
Of course, the most important and, at this point the most impressive, sight in the Black Hills is Mount Rushmore, the huge carving of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The giant sculpture is one of the most patriotic places in the United States because it elevates some of our very best presidents to the stature of deities.
On of the nation’s best state parks is located in South Dakota. Custer State Park showcases the beauty of the Black Hills region, has a variety of interesting wildlife, and features one of America’s great scenic drives, the Needles Highway.
