Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1948

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1948 Summer Olympics — Olympics were not held in 1940 or 1944 because of World War II. The 1940 Olympics were originally awarded to Tokyo, then to Helsinki, before being cancelled. The 1944 Olympics were awarded to London before being cancelled. London was rewarded by hosting the 1948 Olympics from July 29th to August 14th. Bob Mathias of the United States distinguished himself by being the youngest male athlete to win an Olympic gold medal (in the Decathlon). This was the first Olympics broadcast on television.

My Personal Cancer Journey — Another Sleepless Night

The past two nights have been horrendous. I could not fall asleep until around 5 AM. The major culprit was pain, beginning in my lower back and then moving higher and lower as the night progressed. I don’t know the cause of the pain except that I have been spending more time on my feet since I have been feeling more energetic. It could also be related to my many new meds: dexamethadrone (a cortico-steroid to reduce swelling and inflammation), Olanzapine (Zypreza) which has suppressed my queasiness, and Lorazapam (Ativan) to help me sleep (this pill has obviously failed miserably.

Last night was the worst (pardon me for whining). I went to bed a 10:30 and was up at 11 putting ice on my back. I tried going back to bed with the ice but there was no relief. I got up and set myself up in my recliner, with the ice pack and tried that until about 12:30. Still no sleep. I took the Ativan. No help. Next I went back to bed and managed to wake Lee. We had a cup of tea together and tried again to sleep in the living room. Nothing. The tea did help the middle back pain so we went back to our bed. I tossed and turned for another 3 hours, trying to fight off the pain that had now developed in my knees.

I must have drifted off to sleep sometime between 4:40 and 5 AM. I slept till 9. What a horrible experience. My cancer seems to have so many different aspects that I am becoming overwhelmed.

Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1936

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1936 Summer Olympics — These games were held in Berlin, Germany, under the auspices of German Chancellor, Adolf Hitler, who used the games to promote his racial superiority views. The games lasted from August 1st to August 16th. Jesse Owens of the United States was the overall star of the XI Olympiad with four (4) gold medals. Louis Zamperini, of Unbroken fame, did not win a medal but impressed all with his final sub-minute lap in the 5000 meter run. The host nation won the most medals (89) as well as the most gold (33).

My Personal Cancer Journey — Another Round of Radiation

Here we go again. Another round of one of my favorite things. And this time they will irradiate my brain! Well, a discussion with the radiation oncologists relieved my mind (get it?) a bit when she described the procedure and delineated potential outcomes. She said that metastasis of lung cancer to the brain is extremely common and that the cancer cells begin to appear as many small lesions. Because of this typical situation radiation is extremely effective in eliminating these lesions completely. Rarely will they return after radiation treatment. This, of course, was really good news for me.

She also said that there are few side effects from brain radiation except for loss of hair (again!) and fatigue. All in all, we were reassured and confident that this is the best next step for me and my cancer. Treatment begins at 11:30 AM this morning and continues once a day for 10 days (excluding weekends).

Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1932

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, (albeit for a short time) for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1932 Summer Olympics — The games of the X Olympiad were held in Los Angeles, California. No other city bid for the games this year since this period of time was during the Great Depression, a worldwide phenomenon. This was the first Olympics to house athletes in an Olympic Village. Babe Didrikson, one of America’s greatest female athletes rose to prominence here. These Olympics began on July 30th and lasted until August 14th. The US won the most medals, 103, of which 41 were gold.

My Personal Cancer Journey — Another Bump in the Road

When your doctor calls you after a test, the news is generally not good. After my MRI on Tuesday, I assumed that we would discuss the results on Thursday (today) at my early appointment. Instead, my doctor called yesterday with another glitch in my treatment. I was to begin a new chemotherapy medication today, a promising regimen which he referred to as immunotherapy, a drug which supposedly will encourage my own immune system to attack my cancer.

However, the MRI of my brain showed several lesions which he feels we must address immediately. Instead of the plan outlined above, I must begin radiation of my brain to eliminate or control these lesions before returning to the tumors in my lungs, bones, etc. This cancer of mine seems like it’s on a road trip through my body, always searching for new places to visit or to stay awhile. Hopefully we can arrest this intruder before it can seriously damage the most important part of me, my brain.

Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1928

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1928 Summer Olympics — The IX Olympiad was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands from July 28th to August 12th. This was the first time that the Olympic flame was lit to inaugurate the festivities. Johnny Weissmuller won several more gold medals in swimming. Coca Cola became a sponsor of the Olympics for the first time. Once again, America dominated the medal count with 56, 26 of which were gold. The competition was limited to 16 days, a tradition which has continued to the present.

Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1924

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1924 Summer Olympics — The Olympics this year were held in Paris, France, for the second time in 25 years. If you are familiar with the movie, Chariots of Fire, the stories of the two (2) British runners, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, were depicted in the movie. They won the 100 meter and 400 meter respectively at this Olympics. Johnny Weissmuller of the US won three (3) gold medals in swimming. These Olympics began on May 4th and concluded on July 27th. The United States won the most medals, 99 (45 were gold).

My Personal Cancer Journey — Dare I Say It?

I am almost afraid to say it, since it might not be true. But I think that the queasiness that I have been experiencing over the past 4-6 weeks seems to have disappeared. This horrible side-effect from the radiation has made life extremely miserable for me. I was dreading meal time. I felt that I could vomit and any time. And even though I didn’t vomit more than twice over the entire period of time, my stomach was incredibly uncomfortable. Today that queasy feeling is not evident at all. I have been waiting for this day for a long period of time, and disregarding the possibility of jinxing myself, I am proclaiming that the nausea is GONE!

Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1920

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time,  for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1920 Summer Olympics — The Sixth Olympiad should have been held in 1916. They were actually awarded to Berlin. However, World War I intervened and no Olympics were held in that year. The next Olympics (VII) were held in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1920. They began on August 14th and ended on September 12th. These Olympics actually featured a week of winter sports, including figure skating and ice hockey. The United States won the medal count with 45, 41 of which were gold.
