Alexandria VA lies just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, America’s capital city. As such, it is often used as a base of operations for an exploration of Washington. However, Alexandria VA has its own character and is a worthwhile destination itself. Any trip to Washington DC should include some time in Alexandria VA for at least the following reasons:
1. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands tall near the Old Town and commemorates the contributions of America’s first president, who was a Mason.
2. Christ Church in Alexandria’s Old Town was attended by George Washington and Robert E Lee among other notables.
3. Alexandria VA also features George Washington’s famous residence, Mount Vernon.
