Martinique is one of the most interesting islands in the Eastern Caribbean. The capital city, Fort-de-France is delightful to stroll through, especially on foot. Include Martinique in your Caribbean itinerary for at least the following reasons:
1. The St Louis Cathedral in Fort-de-France, Martinique, is unusual in design and worth a closer look.
2. The Schoelcher Library is named for Victor Schoelcher who was instrumental in abolishing slavery in Martinique. The library was originally built and displayed for the Paris Exposition, then disassembled and shipped to the island.
3. The island of Martinique features an active volcano, Mount Pelee, which last erupted in 1902.
