We drove into Lucca, one of the most popular of Tuscany’s hill towns, but not until about 5 PM. We parked just outside one of the city gates (Porto Santa Maria del Borgo) and began our walk.
The first sight we stopped at was the lovely St Frediano Church with its beautiful mosaic facade.
Nearby is the city main square, Piazza Anfiteatro (once the Roman amphitheater here). We had supper here, Veal Scallopine, for $12 a plate.
Next we explored the southern part of the city, stopping at the Torre del Ore and several churches.
We also strolled through the Piazza Napoleone and went by Lucca’s beautiful cathedral before returning to our car.
