We began our last full day in Milan with an excursion to Lake Maggiore, the most western of the three major Italian lakes. We decided to visit the city of Stresa because of recommendations from several family members and friends. Our approach to the city was very scenic as we looked down over the red tiled roofs of the town and onto the beautiful lake.
Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the city. Unlike Bellagio or Como, there were few restaurants and shops and many fewer tourists. As a matter of fact, we noticed that many buildings were boarded up, as if closed for the season.
The hotels along the lake front were extremely luxurious and elegant.
We did enjoy a walk along the park-like lakefront promenade which was attractively landscaped with flowers and statues.
We also got a good look from shore of the gardens of the premier Borromean Island, Isola Bella.
