London is a great destination because of its many tourist attractions, its elegance, and the staid but humorous attitude of its residents. It is an exceptional place to visit for Americans, because here you can get the flavor of Europe without having to learn a new language.
Probably the most significant attraction in the city is the Tower of London, a complex of buildings which has served as regal residence, prison, execution yard, museum, etc.
Nearby is the distinctive Tower Bridge which spans the Thames River.
There are several important churches in the city. St Paul’s Cathedral was built by Christopher Wren after London’s famous fire.
Even more significant is Westminster Abbey, where Prince William & Kate recently married. The church holds the remains of many of England’s monarchs and also displays memorials to the greatest of England’s writers, scientists, and other notables.
The British Parliament is housed in a stunning complex, directly on the river. The famous bell, Big Ben, is located in St Stephen’s Tower.
Other sights in the city include Trafalgar Square, dedicated to the great sea battle in which Napoleon was defeated by Lord Nelson,
Covent Garden, now a popular farmer’s market,
the Royal Albert Hall, a noteworthy entertainment venue,
Buckingham Palace, residence of the Queen and location of a daily “Changing of the Guard,”
Harrod’s Department Store, one of the world’s best shopping stores.
and Picadilly Circus, another popular gathering place.
