Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1976

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1976 Summer Olympics — This marked the first year that the Olympics were held in Canada and remains the only summer olympics ever held here. Unfortunately Canada won no gold medals during the competition, the first time for that distinction in the summer olympics. Highlights included the emergence of Nadia Comenici, who won three (3) gold medals in gymnastics, including a perfect “10” at age 14. America may have fielded its greatest group of boxers with the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Spinks, Leon Spinks, etc., some of whom became professional boxing champions. The USSR led all other nations with 125 medals, 45 of which were gold.
