Travel Quotation 78 — Mason Cooley

Mason Cooley was known for his witty aphorisms. Here is one he wrote about travel. “Travelers never think that THEY are the foreigners.”

Isn’t this the absolute truth? When we are in another country, we are the aliens even though, from our perspective, every one else is strange and unusual. Wouldn’t it be so much better if we realized that the residents of a place are just doing what they normally do, and that we should perhaps try to act a bit more like them? Maybe this would reduce the number of “ugly American” incidents worldwide..
