Vancouver & Alaska – Day 11

After waking up at 4:00 AM to disembark the Coral Princess at 6:10, we boarded our domed train to Talkeetna, the gateway to Denali National Park. The ride took about 5 hours but it was entertaining because of the wonderful scenery and because we were constantlyee looking for wildlife. We actually saw a black bear, several moose, about 10 Dall Sheep, and a number of bald eagles. Our guide, Shawn, was ven ery conscientious and interesting.
When we arrived in Talkeetna, a town of about 800 people, we decided to walk around a bit before proceeding to the lodge. The town was considerably smaller than Ketchikan or Skagway. We walked the entire area in about 15 minutes, had lunch at the West Rib Pub (I had a caribou burger!). The Mt McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge is about 40 miles from Denali National Park, which we will explore tomorrow. Unfortunately, the weather forecast makes it doubtful that we will see the mountain. We’ll see…
