The much-anticipated highlight of our Alaskan Cruise did not disappoint. The weather was spectacular as we entered Glacier Bay National Park, a World Heritage Site and gem of the American national park system. Our ship took us near a number of tidewater glaciers, those whose face coincides with the ocean shore. The most active of these glaciers is Margerie Glacier, and we spent the most time here. I actually witnessed the calving (breaking off of chunks of ice from the face) while we observed the glacier. Other glaciers we noted were Reid, Lumplugh, and Grand Pacific. A park ranger narrated our visit, adding invaluable information to what we observed. It was quite an experience, one that I will never forget.
