Every tourist destination has its attractions. However, because every tourist is different, these attractions have greater or lesser value. In this series Gary gives his reasons for traveling to a particular place. Hopefully some of his thoughts will entice you to consider adding this particular location to your itinerary. The entire series is being categorized under the heading, “Spotlights.” However, you may find more about these locations in the archives of this website, under headings such as, “Great Places,” “Things to Do in,” “Best of,” “Top 10” and “Places of a Lifetime.” In addition, “Walking Tours” of many of these destinations may be available for purchase on the website for the low price of $1.49 each.
The crowning glory (in more ways than one) of the island of Maui is Haleakala National Park. This extinct volcano offers several exciting activities for visitors. Thousands rise early and drive to the top of the volcano to see the sunrise. Thousands more bicycle up and/or down the slopes. Other simply drive to the Visitor Center and explore various walking trails. Whatever your condition or mood, Haleakala has a fun activity available for you. Here are several reasons to put Haleakala National Park on your Hawaiian itinerary:
1. Haleakala crater is an otherworldly landscape with strikingly colored sands and several cinder cones. It is best explored by foot.
2. The silversword plant, an interesting botanical rarity which blooms once and dies, can only be found on these slopes.
