My cultural timeline of the world continues:

1901 – 1925 AD 

1901 AD — The Philadelphia City Hall, the world’s tallest masonry building, is erected in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 1902 AD — Cuba achieves independence from the United States.

1902 AD — The Fisherman’s Bastion is completed in Budapest, Hungary. 1902 AD — Rosecliff is built in Newport, Rhode Island. 1903 AD — The first powered flight of an aircraft occurred in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. It was engineered by the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville.

1903 AD — The Jaffa Clock Tower is built. It is dedicated to an Ottoman Sultan and also commemorates the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

1904 AD — Construction of the Panama Canal begins.

1909 AD — Robert E Peary reaches the North Pole.

1910 AD — Both Leo Tolstoy and Mark Twain die.

1910 AD — The Boy Scouts of America are established.

1910 AD — Halley’s Comet reappears

1910 AD — The Pilgrim Monument is built in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It commemorates the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620 and is the tallest granite structure in the USA.

1911 AD — Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian, reaches the South Pole.

1912 AD — The end of the Chinese Empire and the beginning of the Republic of China.

1913 AD — The automobile assembly line is inaugurated at the Ford Motor Company.

1913 AD — The Little Mermaid is displayed on the waterfront in Copenhagen, Denmark. 1915 AD — RMS Lusitania is sunk. This event will eventually bring America into World War I.

1915 AD — The Armenian Genocide occurs in Turkey. Approximately 1,500,000 people were killed.

1916 AD — Daylight Savings Time is first initiated.

1916 AD — Rasputin is assassinated.

1916 AD — The Navy Pier is built on the Lake Michigan waterfront in Chicago. 1919 AD — The Treaty of Versailles redraws the map of Europe.

1922 AD — The Hearst Castle is built in San Simeon, California. It is one of the most celebrated and opulent palaces in America.

1923 AD — Kemal Ataturk becomes the first president of the Republic of Turkey.

1923 AD — The Walt Disney Company is founded.

1923 AD — The Hollywood Sign is erected in the hills above Los Angeles. It began its life as “Hollywoodland,” an advertisement for a real estate development. The letters are 45-feet tall.

1923 AD — Villa Vizcaya is built on Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove section of Miami, Florida. It was the winter home of James Deering, of International Harvester fame. Now the property is run as a museum.

1924 AD — Vladimir Lenin dies.

1924 AD — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is founded by J Edgar Hoover.

1924 AD — George Gershwin composes Rhapsody in Blue.

1924 AD — The Church of All Nations is built at the base of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, Israel. The church is truly the result of an international effort in both its funding and in the Art and objects which grace the church.

1925 AD — The Fisherman’s Memorial was erected in Gloucester, Massachusetts. This sculpture commemorates the fishermen from Gloucester who lost their lives at sea. It was dedicated on the 300th birthday of the city of Gloucester.

1925 AD — The Victor Emmanuel II Monument was constructed in Rome, Italy, to celebrate the unification of Italy and its first king.
