Spotlight on the Olympics — Winter 1924

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1924 Winter Olympics — International winter games were not formally held as “Olympics” until 1924. However, elements of these games were attempted as early as 1901, 1903, and 1905, under the name “Nordic Games.” After these successful events committee members began to suggest that winter sports be included within the Olympics. Figure Skating and Ice Hockey were finally included in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.

During the next Olympiad, a separate Winter Olympics was planned and held in Chamonix, France, from January 25 to February 5th. The original sports included, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, nordic skiing (consisting of military control, cross-country skiing, nordic combined and ski jumping) and skating, which included figure skating and speed skating).

Sonja Henie, at 11 years old, became a crowd favorite although she did not win a medal. Norway won the medal count with 17, 4 of which were gold (Finland also won 4 golds).

Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1992

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1992 Summer Olympics — This year was the last year in which summer and winter Olympics were held in the same calendar year. From then on, the Winter Olympics were held in alternating even-numbered years. These Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, held from July 25th to August 9th, were the first since the collapse of the USSR. Thus many new nations were allowed to compete for their particular country. Individual athletes from countries such as, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, Slovenia, etc. were now able to compete with a national spirit. Fu Mingxia, from China, became the youngest Olympian ever to win a gold medal, at age 13 (he was a diver). Baseball became an official Olympic sport (Cuba won gold). In basketball, professional players were able to compete for the first time. As a result, the  “Dream Team” consisting of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird easily won gold.
