Roses are among the world’s most popular flowers. Their scents are used in perfume-making; they are often featured in backyard gardens around the world; their variety and beauty have stimulated artists and poets for centuries. Portland, Oregon’s largest city, is known as the “City of Roses” and has developed the International Rose Test Gardens which attract specimens from around the world, which are evaluated according to their color, scent, disease-resistance, and other criteria. The gardens can be found in Washington Park, a large, urban public space which overlooks the city.
