Why Go to Delphi?

Every tourist destination has its attractions. However, because every tourist is different, these attractions have greater or lesser value. In this series Gary’s gives his reasons for traveling to a particular place. Hopefully some of his thoughts will entice you to consider adding this particular place to your itinerary. The entire series is being categorized under the heading, “Spotlights.” You may find more about these locations in the archives of this website, under headings such as, “Great Places,” “Things to Do in,” “Best of,” “Top 10” and “Places of a Lifetime.” In addition, there may be “Walking Tours” of these places available for purchase on the website for the low price of $1.49 each.

Delphi was referred to, by Greeks, as the “center of the world,” because of the presence of the famous Greek oracle there. Rulers and citizens came from all over the region to find out what would happen to them. Today, Delphi is in ruins but the aura, the mystery, and the ambience still remain.  Include a visit to Delphi as part of your Greek adventure for at least the following reasons:

1. The Temple of Apollo housed the famous oracle. It occupies a commanding position on this mountain where the Pythian games were held.

2. There is a large Greek Amphitheater on the grounds of Delphi, just above the Temple of Apollo.

3. Other temples and sanctuaries were also erected on the site, evidence of the importance of Delphi to the average Greek.
