Every tourist destination has its attractions. However, because every tourist is different, these attractions have greater or lesser value. In this series Gary’s gives his reasons for traveling to a particular place. Hopefully some of his thoughts will entice you to consider adding this particular place to your itinerary. The entire series is being categorized under the heading, “Spotlights.” You may find more about these locations in the archives of this website, under headings such as, “Great Places,” “Things to Do in,” “Best of,” “Top 10” and “Places of a Lifetime.” In addition, there may be “Walking Tours” of these places available for purchase on the website for the low price of $1.49 each.
We fell in love with Santorini when we visited in 2005. The entry of our cruise ship into the crater of the volcano (which Santorini is) is absolutely spectacular. The crater, which is filled with water except for a few small islands, has steep sides which are punctuated by two (2) whitewashed towns which perch atop and then spill down the steep sides of the crater walls. The ensemble is positively gorgeous. Don’t miss the incredible island of Santorini in your travels for at least the following reasons:
1. The island is extremely photogenic, especially the town of Thira which greets cruise ships.
2. The architecture of the town is beautiful. Everywhere you look there are photo-ops. Check out the lovely St John the Baptist Cathedral below.
3. Viewpoints abound throughout the town, often in the traditional blue and white.
