Avila, Spain, is a charming, medieval walled city, famous for its Cathedral, its incredibly well-preserved walls, and for St Theresa, who was born and lived here. The Cathedral is built right into the city walls, so it doubles as a fortress. Visitors can walk the walls for great views of the surrounding landscape, as well as interesting looks into the squares and tiny streets of the city. The walls, punctuated with 88 impressive cylindrical towers, were built in the 11th century, are over a mile long, and are considered among the best preserved in all of Europe.
