Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.
1972 Summer Olympics — These games, held in Munich, Germany, between August 26th and September 10th, were forever marred by what has come to be known as the “Munich Massacre,” in which eleven (11) Israeli athletes, one (1) West German police officer, and five (5) Black September Palestinian terrorists were killed. Several notable Olympic athletes rose to prominence during these games. Mark Spitz set an Olympic record with seven (7) gold medals in swimming, the most until 2008 when Michael Phelps won eight (8) golds. Olga Korbut captured the hearts of many during the gymnastics competition. The Soviet Union defeated the US in basketball, a stunning development. The Soviet Union again won the medal count, with 99, 50 of which were gold.
