Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1984

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1984 Summer Olympics — Controversy surrounded these Olympics which were held in Los Angeles, California (for the second time). The Soviet bloc countries boycotted the Olympics in retaliation for the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics by the West. These games took place from July 28th to August 12th. Notable highlights included the incredible performance by Carl Lewis, who equaled the performance of Jesse Owens in 1936 by winning four (4) gold medals. Mary Lou Retton became famous this year by winning the All-Around Gymnastics Gold Medal. The United States dominated the medal count with 83 golds out of its 174 total medals,
