Spotlight on the Olympics — Summer 1996

Now that Boston (right down the road from us) was being considered, albeit for a short time, for the 2024 Olympics, for the first time I might add, let’s take a look at the places where the Olympics have been held over the years.

1996 Summer Olympics — These Olympics, held in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, set records for the most countries competing (197) and the most athletes (10,318). They began on July 19th and concluded on August 4th. The Atlanta Olympics were marred by the Centennial Olympic Park bombing which took place on July 27th. Ultimately Eric Robert Rudolph was charged with and confessed to the bombing. Tennis player Andre Agassi won a gold medal and in the process became the first person (besides his wife, Steffi Graf) to complete the Golden Slam ( Olympic Gold plus victory in  the four tennis majors, Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open, and French Open).
