               Walking Tour of Brasov, Romania

This city, located in the Transylvania Region of Romania, makes an excellent base of operations for an exploration of the region. It is close to Bran Castle, one of the most visited sights in the country, because of its (erroneous) associations with Dracula and (true) associations with Vlad Tepes (the legendary Vlad the Impaler). Be sure to visit the classic castle while in the area.

My walk begins at Piata Sfatului, the Old Town’s central square and main gathering place. It is lined with beautiful Baroque buildings and numerous cafes. At its center, the Council House, a municipal edifice dating to 1420, now houses the Brasov History Museum.

To the south of the square, along Strada Republicii, is the Black Church, a 14th century Gothic structure which still houses an active Lutheran congregation. From here, continue south, and then turn right on Strada Richter, and left on Str. Georghe Baritul, to get to the Blacksmith’s Bastion, part of the city’s fortifications.

Now, continue south, out of the walled town, on Brancoveanu, and then turn left on Aleea Saguna, and right on Str. Prundului, which leads to the Church of Nicholae din Scheii, with its black spire, and the First Romanian School Museum, with its clock tower. They are both located on Piata Unirii.

Next, retrace your steps back toward the Old Town to see the Schei Gate, and then reverse direction again. Turn left onto Aleea T Brediceanu, to reach the Weaver’s Bastion, another old fort which now houses a museum with a delightful scale model of 17th century Brasov.

Now, find Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu, a lovely forest walkway, above the fort. As you walk northward, look for the Mt Tampa Cable Car, on your right. For a change of pace (and a respite from your walk), take the cable car up the mountain for fantastic views of the entire city. When you return to the cable station, continue north (right), and then turn left on Str. Dobrogeanu Gherea, and then continue westward, past the city walls. When you reach Strada Republicii, turn left to return to Sfatului Square, where you started.
